Understanding Cord Cutting and Spiritual Boundaries.

Have you ever had someone suddenly pop into your mind for absolutely no reason?

Perhaps it’s an ex, someone you have fallen out with, a difficult family member or somebody you thought you had completely moved on from.

You may have already cut energetic cords with this person and thought, I’ve done this already, so why am I still feeling their energy?

This is something I am often asked about.

What Are Energetic Cords?

When we have a relationship or strong emotional connection with another person, we can form what many spiritual practitioners describe as energetic cords.

Not every cord is negative. We naturally have connections with the people we love and care about. However, some connections can become draining, particularly after a relationship has ended, there has been conflict, or we have struggled to emotionally let someone go.

Cutting a cord doesn’t mean wishing someone harm or pretending the relationship never existed. It is simply an intention to release an energetic attachment that you no longer want to carry.

When Someone Suddenly Comes Into Your Mind

Something I have experienced over the years is that when somebody unexpectedly flashes into my mind’s eye, particularly when there has been a strong connection between us, I take notice.

Sometimes you may suddenly think of someone you haven’t thought about for months or even years. You may dream about them repeatedly or find old memories resurfacing.

From a spiritual perspective, I believe we can sometimes pick up on energetic connections with other people.

However, the important thing is not to become frightened or obsessed with working out exactly why that person has appeared in your thoughts.

Acknowledge it, trust what you feel and then bring your attention back to yourself.

Why Do Cords Sometimes Need to Be Cut Again?

People sometimes say to me, But Mary, I’ve already cut the cord!

Cord cutting isn’t necessarily something you only ever do once.

If you continue thinking about the person, checking what they’re doing, replaying old conversations or becoming emotionally triggered by them, you may find yourself reconnecting to that energy.

The other person may also continue to occupy a large emotional space in your life.

This doesn’t mean your original cord cutting didn’t work. It simply means it may be time to reinforce your boundaries and release the connection again.

Protecting Your Energy

When I feel I need energetic protection, I ask Archangel Michael to cut and dissipate any cords, attachments or energy that are no longer serving my highest good.

You can then visualise a protective shield surrounding your entire body.

One technique I like is imagining a mirror surrounding your energy. Anything that isn’t for your highest good is unable to enter your energetic space.

The intention isn’t to attack anyone or send their energy back aggressively. It is simply a boundary.

This is my energy. That is yours.

Don’t Send Negativity Back

This part is important.

If you believe someone is sending negativity towards you, don’t retaliate energetically.

Instead, visualise sending pink light towards that person and then release them.

Two wrongs don’t make a right.

Anger, revenge and constantly thinking about what somebody may be doing can actually keep you emotionally connected to the very person you’re trying to release.

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is simply stop participating in the connection.

Your Thoughts Are Powerful Too

Never believe that somebody else’s thoughts or energy are more powerful than your own.

Fear can make us feel powerless.

The more frightened we become about another person’s energy, the more attention we give it.

Bring your focus back to yourself.

Ground yourself. Go outside. Spend time around people who make you feel good. Have a shower or bath and visualise the day’s energy washing away. Open the windows in your home. Burn incense or use whatever spiritual cleansing practice resonates with you.

And sometimes the best energetic protection is a very practical boundary — not answering the phone, not checking someone’s social media and not allowing yourself to be drawn back into unnecessary drama.

Trust Your Intuition Without Feeding Fear

I have always believed in trusting intuition.

There are many strange synchronicities and experiences in life that the rational mind cannot always explain.

But intuition and fear are very different things.

Intuition usually gives you information and then becomes quiet. Fear tends to keep repeating itself.

So if somebody suddenly comes into your mind, acknowledge it. If you feel you need to protect your energy or cut a cord, do it.

Then release it.

You don’t need to spend the rest of the day wondering what they’re thinking, what they’re doing or whether they’re still energetically connected to you.

Protect your energy, send love rather than negativity and get on with living your life.

Sometimes that is the greatest cord cutting of all.
